The European Union Delegation in Georgia and EveryChild Georgia recently signed a contract to begin implementation of a 20-month project on Advocacy for Participation to Protect Children’s Rights.
The overall objective of this Project is to ensure that children without parental care in Georgia have the opportunity to grow up in a safe, caring family environment which protects their interests. More specifically, throughout duration of the Project child welfare service providers and service users will be mobilised and will have full capacity to gather and communicate evidence to engage in the policy-making process to promote and ensure the fulfillment of rights of vulnerable children and their families.
A number of activities are planned within the framework of the Project. As of now, a Memorandum of Cooperation has been signed with the key associate partners. The implementing partner has been contracted to carry out a comprehensive needs assessment in the field child care service provision. The planning process for the advocacy capacity building sessions for small group home and day care center staff as well as the children aged 14-17 is well under way.
In the later stage of the project implementation, together with partner organisations EveryChild will develop and carry out an advocacy strategy and an information campaign to publicize and promote jointly developed recommendations in response to the challenges identified through research findings.
Within the framework of the Project, the country’s first Georgian Foster Care Organisation was established, and registered on 28 February, supported by EveryChild Georgia. EveryChild team held series of meetings with non-kinship foster carers from Tbilisi and the regions to inform them about the purpose, aims, structure and membership terms of the GFCO and to recruit new members.
As a result, GFCO currently has over 90 members nationwide. First Board Meeting was held on 21 March. One of EveryChild’s foster carers, Ms. Tea Kiria was elected as the Chairperson of GFCO.
